Fuller House: Too Much or Just What We Need?

News has been buzzing for a while with rumors of a Full House spin off. They were made official by John Stamos a few weeks ago on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and Netflix has opted in for a thirteen episode series scheduled for 2016. Stamos will be producing the series and guest staring from time to time as his character Uncle Jesse.

However, the main story is going to focus on D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), who is pregnant and recently widowed. She needs some help at home raising her two kids with a third on the way. Her younger sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and best friend Kimmy (Andrea Barber) move in to help. Kimmy also brings along her own teenage daughter, making it once again a household of six.

For the time being at least.

I grew up with Full House. It was one of my favorite shows and I was legitimately sad when it ended. However, I don't know how I feel about this new take on it. I like that they have original cast members returning, because that's always a positive.

But with this set up, will it just be a rehashing of the past?

It sucks that D.J. is facing a similar fate as her dad. I feel that she'll be able to have a good connection with her kids over their loss since she lost her own mother at a young age. For this aspect of the story I really hope that Bob Saget comes back, even if only for one episode, so Danny and D.J. can have that moment of understanding as well. 

If you take a closer look at the plot, you will see some other similarities. Stephanie is supposed to be an aspiring musician, although I'm guessing she's more like a starving artist, and that's why she's crashing with her older sister. Though, by doing so she's taking on the "Uncle Jesse" role and will probably be called "Aunt Steph" or "Aunt Stephanie". Whether she'll be as cool as her own uncle was will have to be determined once the show hits the air. I am curious to see her take on the situation though. When Pam died in the original, Jesse was her brother, so while Danny lost a wife, he lost a sister. I think Stephanie will be playing more of a "I need to support my sister" role rather that the "I need to be there for these kids" role like Jesse was.

Next we have the best friend role.

Yes folks, Kimmy Gibbler is gonna be the next Joey Gladstone. Weird to think about, right? I feel that the most obvious route would be for her to have grown up with having a child of her own. So she's a more level headed thinker, and her child is the pure embodiment of her own youth. She still needs to have some of her old quirks though.

Personally, I want her to be the same old Kimmy that we loved as kids. She was great at being weird and a little bit slow witted sometimes. Let her kid take on the more responsible role, and you have a dynamic where you sometimes wonder who's really taking care of who.

I really feel what's going to make or break this show will be the new kids' personalities. I do not want to see a new generation of Michelle, Stephanie, and D.J. They were all great characters, but we need a new mix if this is going to work. Plus, this is a new era. These girls grew up in the 80's and 90's, which was an awesome time to be a kid, but it's a whole new ball game now. 

Not much has been said yet about the new kids. D.J. has two with a third on the way, and Kimmy has one. Ramona, Kimmy's daughter, will be the oldest and in her teens. J.D. (don't know if this is gonna be a boy or girl) is D.J.'s oldest at twelve, and Max is the younger sibling at seven. These two have about the same age gap as their mother and aunt so it's probably safe to bet that they will have a similar way of interacting with one another.

There is a part of me that wants to see them not get along and make the house a bit of a nightmare to adjust to. In the original, things fell into place very naturally. It worked for them then. but I want them to have to work for that classic harmony. Most of the kids I see today are bratty as hell. I'd like to see that reflected and them learn to be more aware of and caring towards others. 

But that will be a long stretch if they have Tanner blood in their veins. I don't think truly bratty children are allowed to stay that way for long in that family tree.

Overall I have mixed feelings on this incarnation of Full House. It could be really good, but I fear that it might just be too close to the original version to be relevant. I know they did the same thing with "Boy Meets World", a show which I also loved, and I have yet to watch "Girl Meets World." I've heard good things about it though, and it did get a green light for a second season. I think if they can get all of the old cast involved, even if only as guest appearances, it will have a better effect. Nostalgia sells. I'm willing to give it a chance, and we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Now Netflix you need to hook me up and put the old episodes on. I haven't watched Full House reruns since college and I don't have cable right now.
